Growing up with a lot of male friends sounds easy. It wasn’t.
Other girls labeled me fast. I got slut-shamed before I even knew what that really meant. Later, in my 20s, I figured out the hard rule: don’t hook up with your friends. It complicates everything. Bad business. Bad endings.
But it also showed me something valuable. Who was real, and who wasn’t.
I got lucky. A few solid guys stayed in my life for years. Kevin was one of them. He was like a big brother.

His girlfriend at the time, Nicole (hi Nicole), heard about it and understandably freaked out. I assumed I was about to get kicked out before I even unpacked my bag.
But Kevin did something rare.
He stood up for me. Not in a dramatic way. Just firm, simple, clear. He stood up for our friendship.
And that changed everything.
Nicole realized I wasn’t a threat. We ended up becoming friends. Years later, when Kevin was with Stephanie, I got to return that same energy. Stephanie welcomed me right away.
When Kevin passed in January 2026 from pancreatic cancer, I stood beside her while she gave his eulogy.
That’s the kind of man he was.
